HELP! I HAVE OILY SKIN

Your genes and hormones play the key role in whether or not you have oily skin. The most important thing you can do for oily skin is to keep your skin clean using warm water and soap, or a soapless cleanser.

Clean your face with astringent pads if frequently washing your face leaves your skin irritated. Use only water-based or oil-free cosmetics if you have oily skin.

Ways to help improve oily skin:

-Try using a clay or mud mask. If you have sensitive skin, use white or rose-colored clays.

-Choose cosmetic and facial care products specifically designed for oily skin. (Try our finishing veil over your mineral makeup to absorb oil throughout the day).

-Try keeping oil absorbing rice blotters in your purse if you need to blot your face throughout the day.(Like our Oil Absorbing Rice Blotters)

-Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated and flush out toxins.

Why Exfoliate?

Dead skin cells shed naturally over a period of time, but should the cells not naturally and totally shed, a build-up of dead skin cells results, which then forms dull ashy patches on the skin, or can cause an all-over lack-luster look.
To restore the skin's appearance - and here we are not just referring to the facial skin, but the skin of the en tire body as well - you need to manually or chemically remove these dead cells.

One thing that a person must look for in a good exfoliating medium is that the granules used are of such a nature so as not to harm the skin, or to cause micro-wounds through the use of sharp edged granules. Look for body scrubs that do not contain sugar or regular salt. Instead, opt for a fine sea salt scrub to gently slough away dry skin cells. Keep exfoliating to once every week or two. Over exfoliating can be more harm than good.

Your face should be handled with extra care. Do not use a sea salt scrub on your face. Try using a microderm abrasion cloth, or a very gentle facial scrub once a week. Do not exfoliate around the eyes. This very sensitive area is very thin and usually does not need to be exfoliated.

You will feel, brighter, smoother and simply glowing after a good exfoliation.

What is Shea Butter Anyway?

Shea butter is one of our main ingredients in most of our bath and body products. We often get the question, "What is Shea Butter anyway?"

Shea Butter is only found in the tropics of Africa. It is extracted from the nuts of the Shea-Karite tree which begins to bear fruit after about 15 years; and can take up to 30 years to bear a quality crop of nuts with a high content of irremovable fatty acid. It is this irremovable fatty acid that gives Shea Butter its unique healing properties and makes it far superior to cocoa butter and other vegetable butters. Traditionally, Shea Butter was extracted by people who picked the nuts, cracked them, grilled them and pounded them. They were boiled in water for hours until the Shea Butter rose to the surface. It was then scooped into gourds and left to cool and set. Shea Butter is solid at room temperature although it quickly liquefies right around body temperature. This Shea Butter is called unrefined Shea Butter or raw Shea Butter. Since Shea Butter is an all natural product, it can vary widely in quality, appearance and smell depending on where it is produced from and how it is refined or extracted.

How does Shea Butter benefit my skin?

Shea Butter nourishes the skin with Vitamins A, E and F. Vitamins A and E help maintain the skin and keep it clear and healthy. They are particularly helpful for sun damaged skin. They help prevent premature wrinkles and facial lines. Vitamin F acts as a skin protector and rejuvenator. It soothes rough, dry or chapped skin and helps soften dry or damaged hair. Shea Butter is high in unsaponifiables (a type of fat). Shea Butter has between 7-12% unsaponifiables. For comparison, avocado oil, a well known skin conditioner, has between 2-6%. Clean Skin Is Happy Skin
One simple way to take care of your skin is to keep it clean. Keeping your hands clean is especially important because your hands can spread germs to the skin on other parts of your body. Use a gentle cleanser and exfoliate your skin at least once a week.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize!

Make sure your moisturizing day and night. I like a light moisturizer under my makeup with SPF 15-30. At night, I go with a heavier cream. And of course, do not forget about your eyes. The skin around your eyes is so delicate, and they need to be handled with care. Try an extremely hydrating eye cream with natural oils that will absorb naturally to keep you eyes soft and supple. (Like our Whipped Shea Butter) which is great for under eyes and hands.

When choosing a moisturizer, pick one without a lot of colors and perfumes. If you are worried about pimples, choose an oil free moisturizer.

Screening Your Skin From Damage
There is one product that everyone needs: Sunscreen. Even if your skin is naturally dark, you still need to use a sunscreen. Protecting your skin from the sun prevents sunburn, which hurts and is damaging to your skin. Sunscreen also can help prevent wrinkles when you get older and can decrease the risk of skin cancer.

Falling for Fall

Fall is just around the corner ladies!

Pretty soon the days will be getting shorter and colder and we, girls, will be paler. (Altogether now....sigh....). This time every year, I remind everyone to get a lighter foundation for the winter months. Most women who naturally tan need at least two shades of foundation: One for the months when skin is naturally darker, and one when skin is lighter. You can also mix the two shades during those in-between weeks when skin isn't pale yet, but isn't quite the bronze goddess it was mid-summer. Be careful with those bronzers girls. It's not summer anymore. Don't pretend if you pack on the bronzer you will still look like a July beauty. You won't. You'll just look orange. Try a natural looking bronzer (like romance from our line) and lightly dust it on forehead, nose and cheekbones.

To Conceal or Not to Conceal?

Many girls like myself are concealer addicts, while others have never even tried a conclealer before. If you are like myself, I need a concealer. I get those pesky dark circles under my eyes, and of course the occasional blemish.

So, how do you use a concealer anyway?

Mineral makeup is simply the greatest, because it is very versatile - the foundation, could also be used as a concealer. A green powder concealer is also great for dimininshing redness.

I’ve been a huge fan of concealing because of my imperfections, so let me just share some of what I’ve learned from experimentation about concealing.
First of all, the needed tool for concealing is none other than, the concealer brush! Do not use an eyeshadow brush or any brush with animal hair.
Second, the concealer should be at least one shade lighter than your normal shade. It’s because you are going to “load” up some product on the problem area, and the area could darken if you apply the same shade that you use on your whole face. You could always blend in the lighter shade or apply another layer of foundation right after concealing to make the concealed area unnoticeable!

WET APPLICATION- This is right after you have applied your first layer of foundation, or for oily skinned people, finishing powder, and foundation.1. Okay, get your concealer brush!
2. Tap some product onto a separate dish, be it a swirling bowl. Go get yourself some small dish for this! Mineral makeup in pots need to be always kept dry, so as not to get them contaminated, so we should be using a separate dish /container for this.
3. Now, get your spray. Be it a moisture mist, or water. Spray on the dish, directly to the minerals.
4. Using the concealer brush, mix the liquid with minerals. Now, you see liquid minerals! It looks just like liquid foundation!
5. Apply on problem areas the liquid concealer. Wait for it to dry before blending around the edges, and softly blending it.
6. Add another layer of foundation ( dry ) to further blend and even skin out.
7. Last but not the least, spray whole face with moisture mist. Usually, some of my friends complain that the concealed area looks patchy because of wet application, but I say blend them further, because they can really be blended well, plus spraying in the end would really help it look really patch-free!
There you have it , my well-kept secret! The key to successful concealing is practice, practice, and practice! Hope everyone gets to try and experiment until they get em right! Nothing beats looking all flawless , and with only you knowing how much concealing you just did! Cool!

I often get the question, "What's so great about mineral makeup?"

Here is my answer:

Mineral makeup may not be for everyone. So what is it and how is it different?

Mineral makeup is just as the name suggests, made from minerals. These are naturally occurring minerals and inorganic pigments from the earth (Metal ores and iron oxides) that are very finely crushed and milled. They contain no oils, no preservatives, no fragrance, no talc and are safe for even very sensitive skins. In fact, they are so safe that a lot of Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists are recommending them to their patients. Not only is Mineral makeup not harmful for the skin, it is actually good for it. The ingredients are so finely milled that they will not clog your pores and because it is made from inorganic minerals it will not gather moisture to feed bacteria therefore it is totally pure. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, helping to calm and soothe irritated skin.

What are the ingredients in Mineral Makeup?

TITANIUM DIOXIDE- This is a naturally occurring white mineral that is a fantastic sunscreen. It is the second most highly reflective mineral. (the first is DIAMOND) Therefore it not only acts a physical sunscreen but also helps minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

ZINC OXIDE- This is again a natural sunscreen giving you a broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. But more than that it is also used for its wide range of colours. This mineral allows foundations to be different shades, and is also used in Eye shadows and Blushes.

IRON OXIDE -This is a very opaque pigment again used for colouring cosmetics.

KAOLIN CLAY Used for it's oil absorbing qualities.

MICA Is found in nature in a variety of colours and can be used to add shine and sparkle to cosmetics.How does it differ from regular makeup? Mineral Makeup is generally applied with a kabuki brush in circular, buffing motions on clean, moisturised skin. If you have very dry skin, the foundation at first can appear a little powdery but all you have to do is gently mist your face with water and all powderiness vanishes. For oily skins the foundation contains natural oil absorbing ingredients, therefore you will find the foundation nice and matte all through the day. Regardless of your skin type, the foundation will give you a very natural, fresh appearance all day long. Most people find that they prefer the feel and coverage over their heavy liquid foundation. The makeup is also water resistant, meaning it will not run or smudge in humid weather or throughout your workout or if you get caught in the rain. All you have to do is pat the water or perspiration off your face, instead of rubbing it off. Having said that, the makeup is not difficult to remove. Not containing any waxes or oils all you have to do is use your regular, favorite makeup remover.

Over all, Mineral Makeup is worth buzzing about. It is truly a major breakthrough in cosmetic skin care. Once you have tried and perfected the use of Mineral Makeup you will not want to go back to your old foundations.
